Maharashtra: Fire at Vijay Vallabh hospital in Palghar leaves 13 Covid-19 patients dead

Palghar/UNI: At least 13 patients lost their lives in a fire that broke at Vijay Vallabh hospital in the Intensive Care Unit of Virar at the Palghar district in Maharashtra, in the wee hours of Friday.

The incident occurred at around 3:15 am, as the blaze started due to a short-circuit in the air conditioner in the intensive care unit (ICU), hospital sources said.

Fire fighters rushed in and extinguished the fire by 5:30 am.

The Chief of the RDMC of the TMC Santosh Kadam said a total 17 patients were in ICU, of them 13 were killed and four others were rescued as they have been shifted to nearby hospital.

The deceased were identified as Uma Suresh Kangutkar (63), Nilesh Bhoir (35), Pritviraj Vallabhdas Vaishnav (68),Rajni Kadu (60), Narendra Shankar Shinde (58), Janardhan Moreshwar Mhatre (63), Kumar Kishore Doshi (45), Ramesh Upayan (55), Pravin Shivlal Gauda, (65), Amey Rajesh Rahut (23), Shyama Arun Mhatre (48), Suvarna Pitale ( 64) and Supriya Deshmukh (43).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. two lakh each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of the kin of those who have lost their lives in the Hospital fire at Virar in Palghar district in Maharashtra.

While Rs 50,000 would be given to the seriously injured, the information was given in a message by Palghar MP Rajendra Gavit to the media.

The fire at the Covid-19 hospital in Virar is tragic. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon, the message from the PM stated.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Home Minister Dileep Valse Patil has ordered the Maharashtra DG to carry out a detailed enquiry into the Hospital fire, an official statement said.
