Guwahati : A 68-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after he was declared as a foreigner by a court in Assam’s Kamrup district.

Locals claimed that the man was under stress after his name did not appear in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) that was published on Aug 31 which left over 19 lakh people.

The incident took place at at Champupara village located in Goroimari Tehsil of Kamrup district on Sunday.

The man was identified as Jangsher Ali.

He reportedly drank poison on Saturday night.

Locals said recently the Foreigners Tribunal had declared him as a foreigner.

“From 1977 to 1997, his name was included in the voter's list as Jangsher Ali. But his name was changed in the voter lists from 2005 as Dashar Ali. Since then he had visited the court to prove himself as an Indian citizen. But the court declared him as a foreigner. He committed suicide by drinking poison,” a local resident said.
