Bhubaneswar, July 19 (IBNS): A Odisha court on Saturday sent arrested Maoist leader Sabyasachi Panda to 10-day police remand.

The police had sought for his 14 day custody.

Panda was arrested from Odisha’s Ganjum district in the wee hours of Friday.

Acting on an intelligence tip-off, Odisha police arrested Panda from his hideout in Berhampur town. He was absconding and wanted in over 50 criminal cases.

The arrested Maoist leader was involved in the abduction of two Italian tourists.

Besides many other criminal charges, Panda was also allegedly involved in the murder of Swami Laxamananda Saraswati and four of his associates in Kandhamal district in 2008 that had triggered communal conflicts in the region.
