Guwahati, June 19 (IBNS): In a bizzare incident from Assam's Tinsukia district, mice shredded currency notes amounting to Rs 12.38 lakh at an unused SBI ATM.

According to the reports, a private security company FIS Payment & Solution Services India Limited, which runs the ATMs had deposited Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes amounting Rs 29.48 lakh on May 19 in the SBI ATM at Laipuli area in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

But, the ATM went out of service from May 20.

When the local people lodged complaint to the SBI authorities about the non-functional ATM, the private security company had opened the ATM on June 11 for maintenance, but some officials of the company found that cash amounting to Rs 12.38 lakh in notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 were completely destroyed.

The notes were chewed by mice and officials found some dead mice inside the ATM.

Meanwhile, the private company had lodged an FIR with Tinsukia police to probe the incident.

Tinsukia district Superintendent of Police (SP) Mugdhajyoti Mahanta said that, the private company had lodged an FIR at Hijuguri police station and no case has been registered so far. But General Diary entry (no 246, dated June 14, 2018) was made.

The top Assam cop said that, the ATM was not functioning since May 20 and the maintanance company had called up its engineer from Kolkata to repair it.

"When the engineer and other officials opened the ATM on June 11, they found destroyed notes and also found a dead mouse inside the ATM," Mahanta said.

Police investigation is going on.
