Modi launches India’s fastest Metro! 82-km Namo Bharat Corridor goes fully live

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Meerut Metro at the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, marking the launch of what is being described as India’s fastest metro system.

With the dedication of the entire 82-km Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor to the nation, the Prime Minister gave a major boost to urban and regional mobility across the National Capital Region (NCR). He also flagged off the Namo Bharat train from the station.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail had become a symbol of the immense potential of “Nari Shakti”, highlighting that women are serving as train operators, station control staff and in several other key roles across the network.

The 82-km Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor connects Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh.

The inauguration covers the final operational stretches — a 5-km section between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar, and a 21-km stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram — making India’s first Namo Bharat corridor fully operational.

Designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, the Namo Bharat service will link major urban centres, including Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut with Delhi through faster, limited-stop connectivity.

Operating on the same infrastructure in the Meerut section, the 23-km Meerut Metro will have a maximum operational speed of around 120 kmph, making it the fastest metro service in the country. The service will connect Meerut South to Modipuram, covering the entire stretch in approximately 30 minutes with all scheduled stops.

The project is being billed as a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, enabling seamless interchange between regional rapid rail and city metro services at shared stations, and setting a new benchmark for integrated urban transport infrastructure.
