Mukul Roy named in Trinamool MLA murder case

Kolkata, Feb 10 (IBNS): BJP leader Mukul Roy has been named in the case of the murder of Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas. Roy was earlier the second-in-command in Mamata Banerjee's TMC party.

Hours after Biswas was shot dead in West Bengal's Nadia district, police on Saturday night arrested two suspects in connection with the murder and detained another person for interrogation, officials said.

"The death of the MLA was most unfortunate... BJP workers are being slapped with cases. Thakurnagar, Durgapur... Mamata (Banerjee) is seeing this and getting nervous. The Trinamool is wrecked by factional feud. Satyajit Biswas' murder needs an impartial probe; my condolences to his family," NDTV quoted Mukul Roy as saying.

"My lawyer has sent a letter to Gaurishankar Dutta for threatening me... When (Trinamool leader) Dulal Biswas was murdered (in April 2007), they said BJP did it, but it turned out to be TMC," Roy said.

According to reports, two persons, Sujit Mondal and Kartick Mondal, were nabbed from nearby areas when primary suspect in the case, local youth Abhijit Pundari, has been absconding since the incident.

Police said that mother and brother of Abhijit Pundari are being questioned.

Around 8:30 pm on Saturday, an unknown miscreant fired bullets from point blank range aiming at TMC MLA from Krishnaganj assembly constituency in Nadia district, Satyajit Biswas, when he was attending an event at Fulbari area under Hanskhali Police Station limits, metres away from his residence.

The 42-year-old TMC leader was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A heavy police force were deployed to the scene while senior police and administrative officials of Nadia district rushed to the hospital.

A team from state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the scene on Sunday morning.

Sources in the state police said that local police station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) and killed MLA's security guard, who was on leave when the incident took place, have been suspended pending inquiry and a departmental probe has begun against them.

Police officials said that an one-shotter pistol, which was used in the killing, was recovered from the location.

Meanwhile, local TMC leadership accused the BJP of killing the senior Trinamool leader and a complaint against five BJP leaders, including Mukul Roy, has been registered with the local police.

However, denying his party's involvement in the murder, West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh claimed that the incident was an outcome of the factional feud in state's ruling party.
