Naga Students Federation threatens to impose total blockade on Manipur-bound vehicles

Imphal, Dec 20 (IBNS): The Naga Students Federation has said it will impose total blockade on all Manipur-bound vehicles in the Naga inhabited areas, according to news reports on Tuesday.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has called for an urgent meeting, media reported.

The students's federation has demanded that the government of Manipur must ensure safety and security of the Naga people in Manipur.

The indefinite economic blockade called by the United Naga Council (UNC) began on Nov 1.

Parts of Manipur, which were under curfew witnessed violence on Sunday, including wide-scale torching of vehicles on their way to the predominantly Naga Ukhrul district.

Inter-community tension has returned to Manipur since Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh announced the creation of seven new districts on December 9, taking the total number of districts in Manipur to 16, reported India Today.

Manipur currently has nne districts.

The UNC has opposed the move, accusing Manipur of taking portions which were “traditionally ancestral Naga land” and adding these to the newly formed districts, according to media reports.
