Nagaland, Meghalaya Chief Ministers mourn Karunanidhi's death

New Delhi, Aug 7 (IBNS):  Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday expressed their sadness over the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Sangma tweeted: "On behalf of the people of Meghalaya, I extend my deepest condolence on the demise M #Karunanidhi ji, whose ideals had motivated and infused energy amongst many young politicians of the country. May his soul rest in peace. @arivalayam @KanimozhiDMK."

Rio said: "Saddened at the demise of Thiru M. Karunanidhi, former CM of #TamilNadu. One of the architects of TN, he was a nation builder & an inspiration to all regional parties. My condolences to the family, #DMK & all Tamilians. May his soul RIP @arivalayam."

Karunanidhi passed away in a Chennai hospital on Tuesday.

He passed away at 6-10 pm, Kauvery Hospital in Chennai where he was admitted, confirmed.

During Karunanidhi's political life in the last few decades, his formidable opposition was AIADMK's J Jayalalithaa, who passed away in late 2016.

Karunanidhi's political career was not free of controversies as several corruption charges were levelled against him and his party and family members, many of whom joined politics.

His son M K Stalin is his political successor.
