Odisha: 7 killed, 40 injured as bus overturns near Taptapani Ghat in Ganjam district

Bhubaneswar/UNI: In a mishap, at least seven passengers were killed and 40 others injured when a bus carrying them skidded off a bridge near Taptapani Ghati at Palukhela in Odisha’s Ganjam district in the wee hours today.

The ill fated bus was on its way from Rayagada to Berhumpur when the mishap took place at around 0300 hours when the driver lost control over the wheels, possibly due to a brake failure and the bus rolled down from the bridge.

Chief Fire Officer Sukant Sethy said at least 50 personnel from fire brigade team of Mohana, Sankhemundi, Digapahandi and Berhmpur have rushed to the spot in the rescue operation.

Mr. Sethy said the accident site is surrounded by water making it difficult for the fire brigade personnel in the rescue operation. He said all modern equipments, gas cutters used to rescue the passengers from the bus which turned upside down in the mishap.

All the injured passengers have been shifted to Digapagandi hospital and M K C G Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment.

Sources said some passengers were still trapped inside the bus and all efforts are on to rescue them from the bus on a war footing using gas cutters.

Senior fire brigade officials and police officials have rushed to the spot to supervise the rescue operation.
