Odisha: All four ruling BJD candidates declare elected to Rajya Sabha unopposed

Bhubaneswar/UNI: All the four ruling BJD candidates were today decaled elected to Rajya Sabha unopposed in the absence of any other candidates in the fray.

The Returning officer of Rajya Sabha election for Odisha Dasrathi Satpathy today issued the certificates to BJD candidates Subhas Singh, Munna Khan, Sujit Kumar and Mamata Mahanta inside the Assembly premises.

While Subash Singh was the Chairperson Odisha Construction Workers Welfare Board, Mr Munna Khan was the Advisor Minority Affairs , Sujit Kumar was serving as Advisor Special Development Council and Mamata Mahato was a member of Mahila Wing of BJD of Mayurbhanja District unit.

By election to four Rajya Sabha seat was necessitated as the term of Mr Narendra Kumar Swain, Ms Sarojini Hembram(both BJD)and Mr Ranjib Biswal (Congress) will be over on April 2 next and Mr Anubhav Mohanty(BJD) resigned from the seat after he was elected to Lok Sabha from Kendrapara parliamentary constituency in the last general elections.

The election of all the four BJD candidates to the Rajya Sabha was a foregone conclusion as no other political parties contested the election.

The BJP which has 23 members in the house has decided not to field any candidate for the elections so also the Congress which has only nine members in the house.

The ruling BJD has a strength of 113 members in the 147 member Odisha Assembly.

As per the notification today was the last date for withdrawal of candidature.The Returning Officer declared all the four BJD candidates elected unopposed to the Upper House from Odisha.
