Oommen Chandy invitation row: Gandhi slams Centre, Modi

| | Dec 14, 2015, at 10:14 pm
New Delhi, Dec 14 (IBNS): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday slammed the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of 'stopping' Kerala CM Oommen Chandy from attending a state event in Kollam on Tuesday.

"The Prime Minister of the country has insulted people of Kerala. He has stopped the Chief Minister from going to a function. The CM of Kerala is the voice of the state. The PM has insulted that voice," Gandhi told reporters.

Chandy was first invited then asked to keep away from a function in Kollam on Tuesday where Modi is scheduled to unveil the statue of former Congress leader R Shankar.

Chandy also attacked the government over the issue and tweeted: "I considered the opportunity to participate in the statue unveiling function of Shri #RShankar as an honour.I felt extremely sad when I was told not to attend the function by the organisers who invited me to the event."

He said: "It is not a personal insult. #Kerala was insulted when its CM was denied the right to participate in an event where the PM is attending. The statue unveiling is not a #BJP function, it is the Ist public event of #PM in #Kerala, denying #CM from attending is protocol violation."

In a later tweet, the CM said: "A letter was sent after I was told not to attend #RShankar's statue unveiling function at #Kollam where #PM #NarendraModi is participating."

He said allowing all to participate in the event would have been the proper move to pay 'best homage' to R Shankar.

Modi will visit Kerala on Dec 14 and 15.
