Gandhinagar/IBNS: In a major crackdown on illegal immigrants, over 550 Bangladeshi nationals have been detained in Gujarat in an overnight operation, media reports said.

Led by the Gujarat Police, a joint raid was launched in collaboration with the Special Operations Group, Crime Branch, Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and local police units.

Over 450 suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals were detained from Ahmedabad in the wee hours on Saturday.

Over 100 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Surat.

The detained immigrants will face deportation after they are subjected to verification and interrogation.

The officials claim the Bangladeshi nationals were staying in India without proper documents and they used forged documents to stay in the country.

Rajdeep Singh Nakum, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Operations Group, said as quoted by CNBC TV 18, "They detained more than 100 Bangladeshis, all of whom entered India illegally and had been residing in Surat with fake documents for years.

"After the investigation, all of them will be sent to Bangladesh."

The arrests of the Bangladeshi nationals is in line with the larger crackdown on illegal immigrants as it was witnessed in the national capital Delhi.

Multiple arrests were made in Delhi in recent times after individuals were tracked down for living in India with fake identities for decades.
