New Delhi/IBNS: The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha of Parliament were on Monday adjourned for the day amid uproar over the Adani issue which was raised by the Opposition, media reports said.

The Opposition wanted a debate on the charges of bribery and fraud brought against its chairman, billionaire Gautam Adani, by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day.

The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 11 am November 27.

Those rejected by people disrupt Parliament: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday trained his guns at a section of opposition leaders alleging they "try to hijack Parliament for political gains" on the first day of the winter session.

Speaking to the media, Modi said, "There should be a healthy debate in the Parliament and the maximum and proper participation in the discussions. But, unfortunately, those who have been rejected by people are trying to hijack Parliament for their own political gains, resorting to disruptions and chaos."

"Though their tactics ultimately fail, the public watches their behavior closely and delivers justice when the time arrives!"

In a request to the Opposition, the Prime Minister said the sessions in Parliament should be utilised for debates, a day before the Constitution Day of India.

Modi said, "We should utilise our time in Parliament to further enhance India's global reputation and prestige. Such opportunities, which we have got today, are rare for India on the world stage, and we must make the most of them.

"A message should emanate from India's Parliament that the country's voters, their commitment to democracy, their dedication to the Constitution, and their faith in parliamentary procedures are meaningful, and we must rise to the occasion."

The winter session of Parliament is expected to witness a fierce faceoff between the government and opposition.

The Opposition is aiming to raise the Manipur violence and the Waqf issue in Parliament.

The session is commencing at a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA registered a landslide victory in the Maharashtra Assembly polls.
