PM Modi pushes for renewables, natural farming in I-Day speech

New Delhi/UNI: India needs to cut its dependence on other countries for its energy needs, push renewable sources of energy and adopt natural farming, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day speech Monday.

"We have to be self-reliant in the energy sector. For how long would we remain dependent on others for our energy needs? Be it solar, wind, other sources of renewables, Mission Hydrogen, bio fuels or shifting to electric vehicles (EVs) we have to be Aatamanirhar and promote them," Modi said.

He further said that natural farming is also the path forward towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

"We have to cut the use of chemical fertilizers. Today, nano fertilizers offer new hopes but natural farming and chemical-free farming can boost Aatmanirbhar Bharat," Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that new avenues are opening for jobs in green sectors.

"India has now opened the space sector. India now has one of the most progressive policies for drones. For our youth we have opened new doors," Modi said.

He appealed to the private sector to come forward and rule the world, stating that one of the dreams of AatmaNirbhar Bharat is to also meet the needs of the world.

"Be it micro, small, medium or cottage industry, we have to go to the world with ‘zero defect, zero effect’ (ZED) - with the aim to make Indian firms globally competitive and help them get easier access to capital... We have to take pride in Swadesi," Modi said.

He emphasized the need for research and innovation while stating that India is now moving towards 5G and that "the path of digital India will pass through villages".
