Guwahati, June 25 (IBNS): In an alleged incident of moral policing, police arrested eight people who severely beat up a couple over their relationship at Jumurmur area in Nagaon district of Assam.

Accusing a couple of having an illicit affair, some people assaulted the man and the woman on the night of June 23.

Police said the accused tied the legs of the man and tortured him. On Sunday morning, Kathiatoli police rescued the couple in a serious condition and admitted them in hospital.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case and arrested eight persons for their alleged involvement in it.

Nagaon district Superintendent of Police (SP) Shankar Rai Medhi said the incident has been reported from Kathiatoli area under Kampur police station and police have taken the matter very seriously.

“We have already arrested eight persons in connection with it and some others names have also come up,” the Assam cop said.

Earlier on June 17, a girl and a boy were beaten up by some people at Pukhuripar area under Rongjuli police station in Goalpara district. The girl was accompanied with a non-local boy on a motorcycle triggering the outrage of some.

Recently Assam was in news for a shocking case of lynching in which two youths were beaten to death on suspicion of being child lifters after some Whatsapp and social media rumors in Karbi Anglong district.
