Panaji/UNI: Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Saturday said that his country fully supported India's claim for a permanent membership of the United Nation's Security Council (UNSC).

Speaking at a seminar on urban designs organised by state-run Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited, he said India had the full support of Portugal to become a permanent member of the UNSC.

"India has the full support of Portugal to become a permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations," he said.

He said India and Portugal could work together in the field of economics, finance, technology and science and there was a sense of empathy between the leaders of the two countries.

"There is an empathy between our two PMs and also an empathy between our two presidents and my long meeting with Modi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) was very fruitful bilaterally and multilaterally and we discussed concrete projects for investment -- Portuguese investment in India and Indian investment in Portugal," the President, who is on a two-day visit to the state, said.
