Presidency University: Students withdraw gherao, VC leaves campus

| | Aug 23, 2015, at 05:23 am
Kolkata, Aug 22 (IBNS): After more than a day, the students of Presidency University on Saturday evening withdrew their gherao and allowed Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia to go home after her health condition deteriorated.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday came to university campus and joined an event.

To protest against her visit, few students gheraoed the VC.

On Saturday evening, VC Anuradha Lohia called the protesters and held a closed-door meeting.

After the meeting, Lohia left the campus.

One protesting student told IBNS: "Our protest is against 'administrator' Anuradha Lohia and not against 'human' Anuradha Lohia. Our protest is still active and we are demanding her resignation. As she told us that her health condition was deteriorating, we allowed her to leave the campus. But we will be inside her room and will continue our protest until she resigns from the post."

Meanwhile, university's convocation programme was held at Derozio Building near Presidency campus on Saturday.

WB governor Keshrinath Tripathi and state education minister Partha Chatterjee participated in the event.

A huge police force was deployed to control the law and order situation in the campus.
