President accepts resignation of Sarbananda Sonowal from Council of Ministers

New Delhi, May 22 (IBNS) President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted the resignation of Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, from the Council of Ministers, officials said.

"President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, from the Council of Ministers, with immediate effect," read an official statement.

Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, shall be assigned the Independent charge of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in addition to his existing portfolios.

"Further, as advised by the Prime Minister, the President has directed that Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State, shall be assigned the Independent charge of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in addition to his existing portfolios," read the statement.

Assam Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya on Sunday invited BJP, AGP and BPF to form the next government in Assam  after the three partners staked their claim.

Sarbananda Sonowal, the leader of BJP’s legislature party, AGP president Atul Bora, BPF president Hagrama Mahilary and MLA’s of the parties meet the Assam Governor and staked their claim to form the next government.

“After the claim of BJP, AGP and BPF, the Assam Governor had invited the parties to form the next government in the state,” an official of Raj Bhawan said.

BJP alliance captured 86 seats, including 60 seats, by the BJP in the 126- member Assam assembly.

Earlier on Sunday, Sarbananda Sonowal was unanimously elected as the leader of BJP legislature party.

The oath taking ceremony is scheduled on May 24 at Khanapara, Guwahati in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of BJP-led states, Yoga guru Ramdev, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
