President Mukherjee condoles passing away of Ex-Singapore President S.R. Nathan

Kolkata, Aug 23 (IBNS): President of India Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of former President of Singapore S.R. Nathan.

In a message to Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam, the President of the Republic of Singapore, Mukherjee said, “It is with great sadness that I received the news of the passing away of former President of Singapore, H.E. Mr. S.R. Nathan."

"President Nathan’s life and achievements were exceptional. He served Singapore with distinction. He will always be remembered for his sagacity and wisdom in leading Singapore – and his contribution to its emergence as a vibrant economy and progressive society," Mukherjee said.

"I recall my pleasant and fruitful interaction with him when I visited Singapore as External Affairs Minister of India in 2007," said he.

"On behalf of the people of India and on my own behalf, I offer deep condolences to the people of Singapore and to President Nathan’s family," he added.

S R Nathan died on Monday after suffering from a stroke three weeks ago.

He was 92.

Nathan served as the President of Singapore from 1999 to 2011.
