Priyanka takes on Yogi govt over arrest of party leader in Lucknow involved in anti-CAA violence

Lucknow/UNI: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday criticised the Uttar Pradesh government for arresting her senior party colleague in Lucknow.

Lucknow police late Monday night had arrested UP Congress minority cell chairman Shahnawaz Alam for his involvement in an anti-CAA protest in December last year.

Terming the arrest as undemocratic and mentioning the anarchism of the BJP government, Vadra in a tweet said that Congress leaders and workers would be raising their voice against public issues but such an act is not acceptable.

"Misusing police for crushing the people's voice is unfortunate. We also condemn how our party leader was arrested in the late night," she said.

In another tweet, she said that at first the UP president was kept in jail for one month on the basis of a fake case and now it is the turn of another leader, "but we Congress people are not afraid of such harassment and will continue to fight against the government on its failure, " Vadra said.

However Lucknow police claimed that they have arrested Shahnawaz as they have enough evidence on his involvement in the December 19 violence in the state capital during the anti-CAA stir.
