Chandigarh/IBNS: Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has been arrested by the Punjab Police for his alleged involvement in a drug smuggling case, media reports said.

A Punjab Police team reached Khaira's residence early morning on Thursday.

Police conducted a raid in connection with an old case registered in 2015 under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Jalalabad, Fazilka, NDTV reported.

Khaira went live on Facebook when police reached his doorstep. In the live video, Khaira was seen arguing with police.

As per reports, Khaira used the funds which he received for purchasing his properties.

The arrest is expected to worsen the relationship between Congress and Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which are already in the anti-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bloc INDIA that will take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024 General Elections.
