What is Republic Day?

On the same day in 1950, the constitution of India came into effect. Since Jan 26, 1950, India became a Republic nation after British left the country in 1947.

What were other events today?

The 90-minute parade witnessed 22 tableaux each giving tribute to Gandhi.

Following the tableaux, several school children danced to remember the Father of the Nation.

Delhi's tableau showcased Gandhi's association with the national capital and Birla House, which is now known as Gandhi Smriti.

The parade also showcased Indian army's artillery guns, march by an all-women paramilitary contingent from the Assam Rifles.

Four veterans of Indian National Army (INA), which was formed Indian nationalist Rash Behari Bose in 1942, were also present at the parade. All the veterans are above 90 years of age.

INA was later revived by other Indian nationalist Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Last Republic Day before polls:

This Republic Day was the last one before the country will head to the 2019 General Elections. The national polls are due to be held by May.
