Chandigarh/IBNS: The much-talked-about Haryana number plate ‘HR88B8888’ — which grabbed headlines last week after fetching a record-breaking bid of Rs 1.17 crore — will now be reauctioned after the winning bidder failed to pay the amount within the deadline.

Sudhir Kumar, Director at Romulus Solutions Private Limited, had secured the VIP number plate after two days of intense online bidding, making it the most expensive vehicle number ever sold in India.

The payment deadline was set for 12 pm on December 1, but the amount was not deposited.

Kumar claimed on Sunday that he attempted to make the payment twice on Saturday night but was unsuccessful due to a technical issue.

He also acknowledged that his family was opposed to spending such a massive sum on a registration number.

“Discussions are still ongoing at home. The elder members feel it’s unwise to spend so much on a number plate, though I personally believe it’s worth it. A final decision will be taken by Monday,” he said.

How the auction works

Haryana conducts weekly online auctions for VIP and fancy registration numbers.

Applications open from Friday, 5 pm to Monday, 9 am, after which competitive bidding continues until Wednesday, 5 pm.

The entire process is hosted on the official fancy.parivahan.gov.in portal.

This week, ‘HR88B8888’ attracted the most attention, drawing 45 applications.

Starting at a base price of Rs 50,000, the bids kept climbing until they hit Rs 1.17 crore.

What 'HR88B8888' signifies

‘HR88B8888’ is a premium registration number consisting of:

HR – the state code for Haryana

88 – the RTO or district code

B – the vehicle series

8888 – the unique four-digit number

The plate’s appeal lies in its appearance: the capital letter ‘B’ resembles the number ‘8’, creating the illusion of a continuous string of eights — a pattern considered lucky and visually striking.
