Sandeshkhali row: Calcutta HC cancels prohibitory order, opposition intensifies movement
Kolkata/IBNS/UNI: The oppositions-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), CPI(M) and Congress-on Tuesday intensified their movement separately on the Sandeshkhali issue in Bengal where the women were allegedly being tortured by some TMC local leaders, even as Calcutta High Court set aside the prohibitory order imposed by the state administration under section 144 Cr PC at the troubled-torn area in North 24 Parganas, official sources said.
BJP's state unit President Sukanta Majumdar began a sit-in-dharna in front of Basirhat's SP office after being prevented from going to Sandeshkhali.
He alleged that some of his karyakartas were arrested after being lathi-charged and firing teargas shells by the police.
He said they would not move an inch further from the ongoing sit-in-dharna on the road until and unless the party's karyakartas were released from the police station.
The Left Front led by the CPI(M) in a separate rally gheraoed the SP office at Textile More in Baharampur where the protesters and the police scuffled with each other who used batons and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the agitators.
A Congress delegation was also prevented from going to Sandeshkhali as the police stopped them at Rampur in N 24 Parganas.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the removal of Section 144 Cr PC from Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas and directed additional deployment of armed forces to restore normalcy in the troubled-torn area, sources said.
A single judge bench of Jay Sengupta, while cancelling the prohibitory order, which was clamped on Friday night, ordered the deployment of reinforced armed forces to restore normalcy at Sandeshkhali.
The judge said the clamping of the prohibitory order could have been taken with more prudence after identifying the trouble spots and not on the entire Sandeshkhali.
The court asked the administration to identify the sensitive pockets and deploy additional armed forces.
The administration also suspended the internet services from Friday evening.
CPI(M) leader and Advocate Bikash Rajan Bhattacharya, lawyer Shamim Ahmed, and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari moved the petitions separately and sought judicial intervention against the clamping of the prohibitory orders.
The opposition parties like the BJP, CPI(M), and Congress wanted to send their respective delegation to assess the situation thereafter women in villages began agitation demanding the arrest of absconding Sahjahan Sheikh and his close aide Shibu Hazra for their alleged torture of the women and grabbing farmer's land for personal use.
