Sathankulam custodial deaths: Absconding police constable arrested

ThoothukudiUNI: The Crime Branch CID (CB-CID) police arrested suspended police constable of the Sathankulam police station, Muthuraj, in connection with the custodial deaths of P. Jayaraj (60) and his son J.Benicks, here late on Friday night.

Police sources said here today that a special team, led by Vilathikulam DSP Beermohideen traced Muthuraj at Poosanoor village, where he was hiding in a house, and arrested him.

Muthuraj was declared as a "wanted" accused in the case.

He was brought to the CB-CID office where senior officials after preliminary questioning, produced him before a Judicial Magistrate and remanded in judicial custody till July 17.

With this, a total of five policemen of Sathankulam station, including suspended Inspector and Station House Officer Sridhar, two Sub-Inspectors Raghu Ganesh and Balakrishnan and constables Murugan and Muthuraj, were arrested in the case so far.

More arrests were likely in the case during the course of investigation, the sources added.

Muthuraj has been evading arrest, after the CB-CID police booked him under Secs 302 (punishment for murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the IPC.

Meanwhile, CB-CID sources said that a petition will be filed in the JM court seeking police custody of the accused for a detailed interrogation.
