SC reprimanded NRC state coordinator, RGI for speaking to media
Guwahati, Aug 7 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday severely reprimanded the National Register of Citizens (NRC) State Coordinator of Assam and the Registrar General of India (RGI) for speaking to the media with statements on claims and objections process and modalities of the NRC updating process without informing the court.
A division bench of the apex court, comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and RF Nariman asked NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajelaand RGI Shailesh - "who are you and what’s your authority?"
“Don’t forget you are officials of the court and your job is to comply with the orders. How can you go to the media and speak something as you are appointed by the Supreme Court and it is to be finalised by us. Should we send you both to jail? You still have a lot of works to do,” the divisional bench told Hajela and Shailesh.
The top court warned the two top officials of the NRC updating process against speaking to the media in future, saying they would need the court's permission to do so.
On July 31, while hearing the NRC case, the top court directed the centre to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for claims and objections.
The complete draft of NRC was published on July 30 by including the names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants and excluding over 40 lakh from the list.
