'Sexual favours for Rs 370 biryani': Viral stand-up remark triggers outrage, costs Gurgaon developer his job

Gurgaon/IBNS: A Gurgaon-based software developer has lost his job after a controversial comment made during a stand-up comedy performance triggered widespread criticism on social media and ignited debate over accountability for public remarks.

Himanshu Jangra, a web developer employed by Starvik Design, was dismissed after a video clip from comedian Pranit More's show gained traction online, according to media reports.

The incident quickly evolved from a comedy club exchange into a broader discussion about workplace conduct, online outrage and the professional consequences of viral content.

Comment during comedy show sparks backlash

The controversy began when Jangra shared an anecdote during the stand-up show about spending Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani while on a date.

According to reports, he then claimed that when the woman later asked him for a ride home, he sought sexual favours in return for the money spent on the meal.

The remark drew sharp criticism across social media platforms, with many users describing it as offensive and disrespectful towards women.

The backlash also extended to comedian Pranit More, with some critics questioning why he laughed at the comment during the performance rather than challenging it.

Employer announces dismissal

As criticism intensified, Starvik Design decided to terminate Jangra's employment.

The company's founder, Vivek Vishwakarma, confirmed the move in a video statement posted on X.

"We have fired Himanshu. While mistakes have consequences, we also hope they become opportunities for reflection, learning and positive change. After carefully reviewing the situation, we have made a decision. This is our response," Vishwakarma said.

The announcement further amplified discussions surrounding the incident and its repercussions.

Apologies follow viral controversy

Following the social media storm, both Jangra and Pranit More issued public apologies.

Jangra also deactivated his Instagram account amid the growing criticism.

The controversy continued to attract attention online, with users debating whether comments made in entertainment settings should carry professional consequences when they spark public outrage.

Debate over limits of humour

The incident has reignited discussions about the limits of humour, responsibility in public spaces and the impact of viral clips on individuals' careers.

Observers have noted that stand-up comedy performances increasingly face scrutiny as snippets from shows circulate widely on social media platforms, often reaching audiences far beyond those present at the event.

The debate has also highlighted questions about where to draw the line between comedy, personal expression and accountability.

The controversy comes amid broader national conversations about content standards and accountability within India's stand-up comedy industry.

Earlier in 2025, comedian Samay Raina and YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia faced significant criticism and legal complaints following remarks made on the online show India's Got Latent.

That episode fuelled discussions about offensive humour, freedom of expression and whether performers and participants should be held responsible for comments made in entertainment formats.
