Sonia Gandhi calls for 'unity at all levels' in Congress
New Delhi/IBNS: In a message to the rebel leaders, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday called for a "unity at all levels" within her party, which has suffered yet another round of disappointing election run last month.
Speaking at her weekly meeting with party MPs, Gandhi said as quoted by NDTV, "I am very well aware how disappointed you are at the recent election results. They have been both shocking and painful."
"Our dedication and determination, our spirit of resilience is under severe test. Unity at all levels of our vast organisation is of paramount importance and speaking for myself, I am determined to do whatever is needed to ensure it," she added.
Besides getting decimated in Uttar Pradesh by winning only two of 403 seats, Congress suffered a body blow in Punjab where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won a landslide victory.
In Punjab, the AAP won 92 of 117 seats while the Congress managed to win only 18.
The country's oldest party was also defeated in Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand.
Earlier, Gandhi had asked party chiefs in all states to resign and they stepped down as per her directive.
Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and former party president Rahul Gandhi were also present in the meeting on Tuesday.
