Supreme Court slams Madras HC and Tamil Nadu govt over senior cop arrest in kidnapping case

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rapped the Madras High Court and Tamil Nadu government over the arrest of a senior police officer in connection with the alleged kidnapping case involving a family dispute, media reports said.

A bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan questioned the state government whether the suspension of ADGP HM Jayaram was necessary as the senior cop was cooperating with the investigation.

"You can't do this... it is very demoralising," Justice Manmohan said as quoted by NDTV.

Jayaram had moved the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order of arresting him.

His lawyer told the top court that the cop was arrested immediately after the High Court order.

Jayaram was released when he had moved the apex court, the suspended cop's lawyer added.

The State argued that Jayaram was not formally arrested.

Vanaraja, the father of a young girl, had approached a former police constable- named Maheswari- seeking help to break his daughter's marriage with her 22-year-old boyfriend.

Maheswari contacted Jayaram who allegedly reached out to MLA Poovai Jagan Moorthy.

Thr group had allegedly kidnapped the groom's 16-year-old brother after they failed to track the boyfriend of Vanaraja's daughter.

Police said the 16-year-old was released by the group only after pressure.
