Taxis remain off Kolkata streets for second day

Kolkata, Aug 12 (IBNS) Taxis stayed off the roads in Kolkata for the second consecutive day as thousands of commuters faced troubles in reaching their destinations on Tuesday.

The taxi drivers are protesting against alleged police harassment.

West Bengal  Transport Minister Madan Mitra warned of taking tough actions against those drivers who resorted to vandalism.

"Just like the time of strikes, I have asked the police to make their men deployed at every crossing to monitor the situation  in the city," Mitra told reporters.

He said: "Cases will be lodged against the perpetrators under non-bailable sections if any vandalism occurs in the city."

The taxi drivers are also demanding the release of  22 fellow drivers who were arrested last week.

As many as 22 drivers were arrested for staying off roads last week, reports said.  

Commuters found another tough day to reach their destinations in the city on Tuesday.

With taxis not serving them, Metro trains were packed with commuters and huge queues were noticed across the city to board auto-rickshaws.
