Three jawans killed in militant ambush along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border

Guwahati, Jan 22 (IBNS): At least three jawans were killed and two others injured while militants ambushed an Assam Rifles vehicle along Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Tinsukia district on Sunday morning.

The militants of ULFA(I) and NSCN(K) attacked on a vehicle of Assam Rifles by grenades and loud explosions were heard at Warabasti 12th Mile area on NH-53 near Jagun in the Upper Assam district along border with Arunachal Pradesh.

In the militants attack, five jawans were critically injured and they were rushed to the nearest government hospital.

A top police source said that, three among the five injured jawans succumbed their injuries.

Following the militants' ambush, top police and army officials rushed to the area and launched massive operation against the militant group which comprised over 50 cadres equipped with sophisticated weapons.

Tinsukia district Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Mahanta said that retaliation is going on and army chopper also used in the operation.

Meanwhile, thousands of tourist including foreigners on the way to the Pangshu Pass festival are stranded in NH 53.

Tourists and several vehicles were stranded between Nampong in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh and Jagun in Assam following the militants attack.

Last year, at least three jawans were killed when the ULFA(I) militants ambushed on an Assam Rifles convoy in Tinsukia district.
