TMC MP's personal comment on FM Sitharaman triggers criticism in Parliament; BJP demands apology

| @indiablooms | Sep 14, 2020, at 09:42 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: BJP has demanded an unconditional apology from All India Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy who made a personal comment in Parliament during the monsoon session which began today.

The comment, which has now been deleted, was directed at the personal attire of the Finance Minister, alleged MPs demanding the apology.

Saugata Roy was making a statement on the Banking Regulation Amendment Bill when he threw the personal remark at Nirmala Sitharaman, implying that the nation's economic condition had increased her worries, said an NDTV report.

Several members of the ruling party objected to the comment, accusing Roy of insulting women, after which Speaker Om Birla said the comment would be deleted.

"Commenting on personal attire...Being a senior member, what is he talking ? He should apologise unconditionally. It is an insult to womenfolk," said Pralhad Joshi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, reported media.

While defending the bill, Sitharaman referred to the comment and said, “If only Saugata Roy could listen instead of making remarks on other factors."

Roy, however, said he did not believe he had said anything unparliamentary, the report added.
