TN records highest 3,713 new COVID-19 positive cases, 68 fatalities, death toll goes past 1,000-mark

Chennai/UNI: Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever daily spike in the number of novel coronavirus infections, after 3,713 people diagnosed positive on Saturday, pushing the cumulative tally to 78,335, while another record single-day high of 68 fatalities took the State's total death toll to 1,025.

The pandemic continued to wreak havoc across Tamil Nadu, with its capital Chennai figuring among the worst-hit cities in the country.

The total number COVID-19 positive cases in Chennai has crossed the grim-milestone of 50,000 today.

Out of the total 78,335 COVID-19 cases reported in the State till date, Chennai alone has 51,699 cases and 776 deaths.

Health department in its bulletin said a record number of 10,77,454 samples of people were tested in 89 government and private labs all over the state till date, including 34,805 samples of persons, which was the highest number of samples tested in a single day so far, during the past 24 hours.

While 9,98,543 samples of persons tested negative, the testing of 576 samples of others were under process.

As many as 2,737 COVID-19 positive patients were discharged after treatment today and the number of recoveries till date was 44,094.

The bulletin said presently, there were 33,213 patients undergoing treatment, including those in isolation wards and all of them were under active medical supervision.

The recovery rate was estimated at 55.42 percent and the mortality rate was put at 1.31 percent.

Of the total 1,025 deaths so far, 776 were reported in Chennai alone, followed by Chengalpattu 75,  Thiruvallur 58, Madurai 20, Kancheepuram 18, Villupuram 13, Thiruvannamalai 9, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Tirunelveli  and Virudhunagar 5 each, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi  and Tiruchirapalli 4 each, Erode and Vellore 3 each, Krishnagiri, Pudukottai, Ranipet, Salem, Sivagangai and Theni 2 each, Coimbatore, Kallakurichi, Kanyakumari, Namakkal, Thanjavur and Airport Quarantine 1 each.

Next to Chennai, Chengalpattu district reported 4,911 COVID-19 positive cases, followed by Thiruvallur 3,420, Madurai 1,703,Kancheepuram 1,683, Thiruvannamalai 1,624, Vellore 1,011, Cuddalore 940, Thoothukudi 832, Villupuram 765, Tiruneveli 723 and Ranipet 719.

The rest of the Coronavirus positive cases were reported from other places in the State, the bulletin added.
