Tripura polls: CPI-M moves ECI against deployment of Assam and Gujarat police in the state

Agartala/UNI: A few hours before the campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in poll-bound Tripura, the opposition CPI-M reached the Chief Election Commissioner of India, accusing the BJP of deploying state police of Gujarat and Assam claiming them as central paramilitary force with an ulterior motive.

The CPI-M apprehended that the state police of BJP ruled states were pulled in election duty to Tripura who would be used for manning the polling stations under the guidance of ruling party cadres on the day of poll.

In a letter to ECI, CPI-M Politburo member, Nilotpal Basu has raised concerns with regard to the deployment of police forces of Gujarat and Assam in Tripura where assembly elections are scheduled on 16 February, replacing BSF.

The party has demanded that only central paramilitary forces should be deployed.

The letter has drawn the attention of ECI for removal of Rahul Das, SDPO Bishalgarh who is facing serious allegations and has FIRs lodged against him.

The Assam Chief Minister has been camping in Tripura and therefore, the appearance of Assam police causes concern, the letter says.

Equally, the deployment of Gujarat police from the other corner of the country to this tiny North Eastern state is bound to be perceived as an extraneous factor for influencing the poll outcome, the letter said, adding, "We, therefore, urge you that the conduct of a free and fair poll is also seen as such and ensure that only Central forces are deployed."
