Kolkata/IBNS: The Kolkata Police have arrested two more boys in the alleged ragging and subsequent death of 18-year-old Jadavpur University student, Swapandeep Kundu, earlier this week.

The police arrested Deepshekhar Dutta, a second-year economics student, and Manotosh Ghosh, a second-year sociology student, over their alleged role in the incident.

A former student of JU, Sourav Chowdhury, was the first arrest made by the police on Friday in connection with the mysterious death of the first-year student.

On Saturday, he was remanded in police custody until August 22. An ex-student, Chowdhury was living in the hostel illegally. He did his MSc in Mathematics in 2022.

Swapnadeep Kundu, (18), fell fatally from the hostel's second floor on the JU campus at midnight on August 9 and succumbed to his multiple wounds at a city hospital the next day.

The Kolkata Police registered a murder case after an initial investigation revealed that the victim was subjected to intense ragging.

Kundu, a resident of Bogulia in Nadia district, joined JU's Bengali Honours stream only three days prior to his death.

Kundu’s parents and friends have alleged that he had been a victim of ragging. According to the police, the boy had called his mother at around 9 PM on the day he died and during the conversation expressed fear about “something very scary and take him home immediately”.

His phone was switched off after the conversation. The police are looking at the call records to find out if he talked to anyone else after talking to his mother.

His roommates are being questioned and the police are awaiting the results of his post-mortem.

The university has also constituted a 7-member committee to probe the matter and report within a fortnight.
