'UCC is an aspiration, can't be forced on people': P Chidambaram after PM Modi's renewed push

New Delhi/IBNS: Former Union Finance Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram has called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi's renewed push for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which will enforce a common set of laws for all citizens of India.

In a long post on Twitter, Chidambaram wrote that UCC is an "aspiration" and it can't be imposed on people "by an agenda-driven majoritarian government".

An excerpt of his post reads, "A UCC is an aspiration. It cannot be forced on the people by an agenda-driven majoritarian government. The Hon'ble PM is making it appear that UCC is a simple exercise.

"He should read the report of the last Law Commission that pointed out it was not feasible at this time. The nation is divided today owing to the words and deeds of the BJP. A UCC imposed on the people will only widen the divisions."

The Congress veteran further said, "The Hon'ble PM's strong pitch for the UCC is intended to divert attention from inflation, unemployment, hate crimes, discrimination and denying States' rights.

"The people must be vigilant. Having failed in good governance, the BJP is deploying the UCC to polarise the electorate and attempt to win the next elections."

Modi on Tuesday questioned how a country can function on the basis of dual laws that govern personal matters.

He also accused the country's opposition parties of misleading the Muslim communities.

After returning to power in 2019 for the second term, the Modi government took historic steps to abrogate Article 370 and Article 35A which provided a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

One of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s key poll issues- the construction of Ram Temple in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya- has also come into reality.
