Union Cabinet approves draft Surrogacy Bill
New Delhi, Aug 24 (IBNS): The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, approved the draft bill on surrogacy aimed at safeguarding the rights of surrogate mothers and to curb malpractices, according to media reports.
A Group of Ministers (GoM), including Union Health minister JP Nadda, had earlier cleared the draft.
The Draft Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016 suggests creating provisions in the law to make the parentage of surrogate children 'legal and transparent', media reported
A key aim of the draft is to check malpractices and exploitation of women, especially those vulnerable, it was reported.
The bill has also proposed a mandatory insurance for the surrogate mother.
The draft has proposed to make surrogacy available only to those who are 'Indian, married and infertile', and make the option of surrogacy unavailable to unmarried couples, gay couples, those who already have adopted children and to foreigners choosing to opt for surrogates in India, the media reported
