New Delhi, Feb.9 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court on Thursday held Delhi's real estate barons Ansal brothers guilty of causing death of 55 people due to negligence in the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire, but sentenced one of them to jail while reprieving the other because of his age, NDTV has reported.

Younger brother Gopal Ansal has been given a year-long jail sentence. He has been given a month to surrender.

Judges said he must go to jail within four weeks. (77) will not be jailed because of his age.

In 1997, a fire at the cinema hall, built and operated by the Ansals,  left 59 people dead.

Most of them choked to death while being trapped inside.More than 100 people were also injured in a stampede that took place when the panicky people made a rush to escape.

It was found that basic fire safety rules had been flouted with  exit routes being blocked to add more seats.

The incident happened during the screening of Bollywood movie 'Border'.
