US trying to unbalance India's political situation and complicate elections: Russia

Moscow/New Delhi/IBNS: The United States is making comments on religious freedom in India to "unbalance India's political situation and complicate the General Elections", said Russia in a statement.

Russia made the comment after a US federal commission's report slammed India for alleged violation of religious freedom in the country.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said as quoted by NDTV, "The reason (behind the US accusations) is to unbalance the internal political situation in India and complicate the General Elections."

The US report has slammed India for implementing "discriminatory" national policies like Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, CAA, cow slaughter laws et al.

"Both news media and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) reporting on religious minorities were subjected to strict monitoring under FCRA regulations," the report had said.

Slamming the report, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said,"We really have no expectation that the USCIRF will even seek to understand India's diverse, pluralistic and democratic ethos."

"Their efforts to interfere in the largest electoral exercise of the world will never succeed," he added.
