Shahjahanpur: A pregnant woman was beaten to death and later her body was cremated by her husband and his brothers allegedly for dowry in Khutar area of Shahjahanpur district here in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said here on Saturday.

Circle Officer (CO) Powayan Pankaj Pant said that Sarita Devi (180), a resident of Aurangabad village, got married to Shamsher Singh, a resident of Raghunathpur, five months back.

"It is being alleged that Shamsher was harassing Sarita for dowry since marriage," he said.

He said that the family members of the deceased have alleged that when the demand for dowry was not met, Shamsher along with his brothers Angresz Singh and Rajvir Singh, thrashed Sarita, who was three months pregnant, brutally on July 12 leading to her death.

The CO said that when Sarita's mother Pummy reached the spot and alleged murder, the accused locked her and her children in a room and cremated the body.

"It has been alleged that after the last rites the accused immersed the remains in flood water," he said.

He said that the police, which reached the spot after getting information, recovered the bones from the flood water on Saturday.

"The bones are being sent for DNA testing through the forensic team. The police have lodged a case against three persons on the basis of the complaint of Sarita's mother and Shamsher has been arrested," he said.
