Vijay’s big Amma Canteen push: Better food, new infrastructure, modern kitchens
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday ordered a major overhaul of Amma Canteens across the state, directing officials to modernise infrastructure, improve amenities, and ensure better quality food at the subsidised eateries, media reports said.
The move follows complaints over the taste and quality of food being served at several Amma Canteens.
Vijay chaired a review meeting with senior officials and instructed them to take immediate corrective steps.
According to an official release, the Chief Minister called for better kitchen facilities, procurement of additional cooking equipment, and upgraded infrastructure to ensure the public receives “quality and delicious food”.
Complaints trigger government action
Feedback regarding unsatisfactory food quality at some Amma Canteens had reportedly reached the Chief Minister’s office in recent weeks.
During the review meeting, Vijay stressed the need to maintain hygiene, improve cooking facilities and strengthen overall operations at the canteens, which are widely used by daily wage workers, senior citizens and low-income families.
Officials were also directed to improve maintenance and ensure smoother functioning of the outlets across the state.
Amma Canteens launched under Jayalalithaa
Amma Canteens, officially known as Amma Unavagams, were introduced on February 24, 2013, during the AIADMK government led by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
Named after the late leader, who was affectionately called “Amma” by supporters, the scheme began in Chennai before expanding to several towns and cities across Tamil Nadu.
The canteens quickly became popular for offering low-cost meals to the public.
Scheme continued despite political change
When the DMK came to power in 2021, the government chose to continue the Amma Canteen scheme instead of renaming or discontinuing it.
The administration had also announced plans to open 200 more canteens in semi-urban regions.
At present, 383 Amma Canteens operate under the Greater Chennai Corporation, while another 237 function under various local bodies across Tamil Nadu.
