Guwahati/IBNS: Tension prevailed in central Assam’s Nagaon district as an angry mob had attacked a police station with stones after the death of a youth due to alleged police thrashing during the COVID-19 curfew restrictions.

The incident took place at Rupahihat area in Nagaon district on Wednesday night and several police vehicles were partially damaged in the angry mob attack and the local residents had staged a protest in front of the police station by carrying the body of the deceased youth.

The victim was identified as Sohaib Akhtar of Gereki village under Rupahihat police station.

Nagaon district Superintendent of Police (SP) Anand Mishra said that, when a police team went to the area following information about illegal betting during COVID-19 curfew restrictions and as the police team reached the spot, the youths gathered at the area started running away.

“We have taken the incident very seriously. A probe will be initiated. All things will come out during investigation,” Anand Mishra said.

But, local residents claimed that some youths of the area had played cricket during curfew restrictions and the youth died due to head injuries while police beat him brutally.

Local villagers have demanded a high level probe into the incident.
