Warm welcome, big diplomacy: Indian PM Narendra Modi starts three-nation tour in Jordan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jordan on Monday as part of his three-nation tour, receiving a warm welcome from members of the Indian community. Jordan’s Prime Minister, Jafar Hassan, greeted the Indian leader at the airport upon his arrival.

Expressing his appreciation, Modi wrote on X: “Thankful to Mr. Jafar Hassan, Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, for the warm welcome at the airport. I am sure this visit will boost bilateral linkages between our nations.”

The Prime Minister also praised the Indian diaspora for their enthusiastic reception in Amman. “Deeply touched by the warm welcome extended by the Indian community in Amman. Their affection, pride in India’s progress, and strong cultural bonds reflect the enduring connection between India and its diaspora. Also grateful for the role the diaspora continues to play in strengthening India–Jordan relations,” he said.

Jordan marks the first leg of Modi’s three-country visit, which also includes Ethiopia and Oman. The visit to Jordan is particularly significant, as it is the first full-fledged bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 37 years and coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Ethiopia

At the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Modi will travel to Ethiopia, home to the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa. India had welcomed the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 in 2023 during its G20 Presidency.

During his visit, Modi will hold talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, meet members of the Indian diaspora, and address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament. His address will highlight India’s democratic journey as the “Mother of Democracy” and underscore the growing India–Ethiopia partnership in the Global South.

Oman

The final leg of the tour will take Modi to the Sultanate of Oman, marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. In Muscat, he will meet His Majesty the Sultan of Oman to further strengthen strategic, commercial, and economic ties.

The Prime Minister will also address the Indian diaspora in Oman, acknowledging their vital role in deepening bilateral relations.
