Water crisis forces schools in Udupi to abandon mid-day meal scheme

Udupi, May 31(UNI) Thanks to severe potable water crisis, several government schools in Udupi district of Karnataka have discontinued serving mid-day meals to children.

The school timings have been shortened to afternoon from early hours. 'Children had been asked to have lunch in their houses as there is no potable water is available to cook", a teacher said.

When the situation was brought to the notice of the higher authorities in the district education department,

they had directed to hold classes in the morning and declare holiday later.

The water crisis in schools is so acute that several schools in the districts are struggling to source water for even use in toilets.

The institutions have been directed to cook mid-day meals only if potable water was available and not to take risk by utilising unsafe water for it, sources said.

Devotees visiting pilgrim centre Dharmasthala have been asked by Dharmadikarito postpone their visit in the wake of the temple facing severe water crisis.
