'We must not watch one of our greatest minds be sacrificed': Zeenat Aman backs Sonam Wangchuk, urges govt to open dialogue

Wangchuk joined the agitation led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), whose members have been camping at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, calling for greater accountability and reforms in the country's examination system.

Zeenat Aman highlights Wangchuk's contributions

In a social media post, Zeenat Aman reflected on Wangchuk's contributions to education, environmental conservation and social development, while stressing the importance of responding to peaceful protests through dialogue.

She wrote: "Mr. Wangchuk is the founder of SECMOL, the inventor of the ice stupa, a harbinger of educational reform in Ladakh, a dedicated environmental and community activist, and the inspiration of that much loved Bollywood character 'Phunsuk Wangdu' played so compellingly by Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots."

She further added: "By all accounts Mr. Wangchuk is a brilliant and conscientious man, one that has been recognised globally for his social impact with umpteen prestigious awards."

'Open dialogue with the protesters'

Appealing to the government, the veteran actor urged authorities to engage with Wangchuk and the protesters through peaceful discussions.

"With respect to Mr. Wangchuk's wishes, I implore the Indian government to open dialogue on this matter that concerns the future of all India."

She concluded by highlighting India's democratic traditions: "We must not become a society that sits back and watches one of its greatest minds be sacrificed. India has a long history of peaceful protest; those who wield power are obliged to meet such protest with peaceful dialogue."

Hunger strike enters Day 17

Wangchuk's hunger strike entered its 17th day on Tuesday amid growing concerns over his health.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which launched the agitation over alleged irregularities in national-level examinations such as NEET and CUET, has claimed that Wangchuk has lost significant weight during the protest.

The movement is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging repeated lapses in the conduct of competitive examinations and calling for greater transparency and accountability in the education system.
