West Bengal: Civic volunteers-police clash in Malda

| | Sep 15, 2015, at 03:17 am
Kolkata/Malda, Sept 14 (IBNS): A civic volunteers' protest rally turned violent on Monday when protesters threw bricks and stones aiming the police in Malda district of West Bengal.
The police restored to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

Demanding regular salary and protesting against illegal recruitment, at least 1000 civic volunteers took out a protest rally to submit a deputation to the Superintended of Police and the District Magistrate on Monday morning.

When police stopped the rally, protesters allegedly threw bricks and stones aiming at the police.

The agitators also blocked the Malda-Manikchak state highway.

A huge police force and Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in the spot.

The president of West Bengal Civic Police Association (WBCPA), Sanjay Poria told IBNS: "We had informed the administration about our protest programme earlier on Sept 8. But police did not give any response to the letter. Our rally was completely peaceful. Suddenly police attacked us brutally without any reason. At least 75 people including protesters and general pedestrians who were not involved in this movement were injured. Police have arrested more than 65 protesters."

"We will continue our movement until the government fulfills our demands," he added.

However, few protesters and policemen were injured during the clash.

Malda SP Prasun Banerjee told IBNS: "Few protesters gathered unlawfully at the ITI Ground under English Bazar Police Station and held a rally without taking permission. They had also blocked the Malda-Manikchak state highway and threw bricks aiming the police force. Then the police had to lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Six policemen including Deputy Superintended of Police (DSP) of Malda District Police (Headquarters) Siddhartha Darji were injured during the clash. We have arrested seven protesters."
