Kolkata, Mar 22 (IBNS): At least seven persons, including three children and two women, of a same family were killed as a tar-filled tanker overturned and fell on a private car on Durgapur Expressway (NH2) near Rathtala area in Burdwan district of West Bengal on Wednesday morning, reports said.

According to reports, when a Howrah to Asansol bound sedan car was trying to overtake a tanker, the tar-filled tanker lost its control and fell on the vehicle at around 9 am.

The car was mangled under the tanker and covered with hot coal-tar, leaked from the tanker.

Later, fire and emergency services officials, one fire tender engine, police, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI)'s ambulances and rescue cranes rushed to the spot.

After being recovered from the car, seven passengers were taken to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, where all were declared brought dead.

"Deceased have been identified as Rajan Kumar, Reshmi Singh, Seshnath Singh, Nirmala Singh, two children, Anwesha Singh and Arabh Singh, and 13-year-old Riya Singh. They all were the residents of Golmohor area in Kolkata's neighbouring Howrah city," a senior official of Burdwan district police told IBNS.

"Nearly 42-year-old Rajan Kumar, who bought the car two days ago, was an inspection of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and posted in Howrah division," the official added.

Meanwhile, alleging delay in arrival of rescue teams, locals staged demonstration at the scene and police restored to mild lathicharge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse agitators.

However, local police have seized the killer tanker while its driver is still absconding.
