West Bengal govt to commence probe again into Tagore's Nobel medal theft

Kolkata/Burdwan, Aug 5 (IBNS): A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted to find out Rabindranath Tagore's stolen Nobel Prize medal if given a chance, the state government has started preparation to begin probe again into the matter, a senior official said.

During a press conference in West Bengal's Burdwan district on Friday, state's Chief Secretary Basudeb Banerjee informed that Home Secretary Malay Dey would be sending a letter to the Centre, seeking permission to start the probe.

"Earlier in 2015 we sent a letter to the Centre, asking to take over the investigation. We have received no communication yet," Basudeb Banerjee said.

"Today our Home Secretary will be sending a reminder to the Centre again. We will also ask the CBI to hand over gathered information and evidences to us," Banerjee added.

During an event at Shantiniketan on Thursday, Mamata Banerjee said that she would find out country's first Nobel medal, won by Rabindranath Tagore in 1913, if given a chance to investigate.

Earlier in 2004, R. N. Tagore's Nobel Prize medal was stolen from Visva Bharati University's museum and it's still untraceable, twelve years after the theft.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) completely stopped its investigation in 2009, due to zero development.

However, which department will conduct the probe- West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or Special Investigation Team (SIT)- has not been decided yet.
