Will support Rahul to make alliance in 2019 polls: Sonia Gandhi at CWC meet
New Delhi, July 22 (IBNS): Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday said her party is committed to make alliance and will support President Rahul Gandhi in this endeavour.
"We are committed to make alliances work and we are all with him (CP @RahulGandhi) in this endeavour. We have to rescue our people from a dangerous regime that is compromising the democracy of India," said Sonia Gandhi during her address at the Congress Working Committee meet.
The Congress Working Committee meeting is especially significant after Rahul's sporadic attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the debate on No Confidence Motion against the NDA government in Parliament on Friday.
The Congress President has already indicated that his party will be working with oppositions and will eye for state-specific alliances ahead of the 2019 general elections.
In fact the CWC meeting was called to give Rahul a go ahead on the same.
During his address, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said: "I assure Shri @RahulGandhi ji that we will fully support him on his onerous task of restoring India’s social harmony & economic development."
Rahul Gandhi made a unique move on Friday during the debate when he hugged the PM inside the Parliament, grabbing attention across the nation.
Later a wink by him was reprimanded by the Speaker.
The Narendra Modi government on Friday defeated a No Confidence Motion brought by the Opposition by a big margin, after a daylong debate when the ruling party was attacked over defence deals and accused of not delivering what it promised in the past four years.
The government won 325 (Noes) against 126 (Ayes) in the voting at around 11 pm after the Prime Minister delivered a long speech presenting a report card of his rule in the past four years.
Targetting PM Modi directly during his speech on the No Confidence Motion in Lok Sabha on Friday, Rahul said Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lied about the facts of the Rafale deal and a secrecy clause under pressure of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Nirmala Sitharaman lied to the country over the Rafale deal under Prime Minister Narendra Modi when she said she could not reveal the details of the deal owing to a secret pact with France. There is no such pact," said Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress president said he came to know from French President Emmanuel Macron himself that there was no secret pact between India and France.
He attacked the PM and the BJP on ‘favouritism’ on the Rafale deal by assigning it to a businessman with no experience in building planes, instead of to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)
