Winter session of Assam assembly begins, Madrassa repeal bill to be tabled today

Guwahati: The three-day winter session of Assam assembly began from Monday with heated arguments from the opposition and by following COVID-19 protocols.

According to the reports, around 12 government bills including ‘The Assam Repealing Bill, 2020’ (repeal provisions of Madrassa and Sanskrit Tolls in the state), Assam Education (Provincialisation of Services of Non-Teaching Staff of Venture Educational Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2020 would be tabled in the winter session of the state assembly.

Other bills which will be tabled in the session are – The Moran Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020, The Matak Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020, The Kamatapur Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill, 2020, The Bodo Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council Bill, 2020, The Assam Micro Finance Institutions (Regulation of Money Lending) Bill, 2020.

Assam Education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said he will introduce a bill to repeal provincialisation of Madrassa.

He tweeted:  “Today I shall introduce a Bill to repeal Provincialisation of Madrassa. Once the Bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by Muslim League govt in pre-Independence Assam.”
